This false color imageΓÇöessentially a composite map of infrared point sources detected by the IRAS satellite throughout the skyΓÇörepresents an attempt to find as many strong infrared-emitting objects as possible, regardless of whether they are in the Milky Way. The blue sources are cool stars in our own galaxy, yellow-green ones are other galaxies, and reddish ones are large filaments and patches of H I gas. Black represents regions for which IRAS made no observations.
